Hamilton Island, a Popular Queensland Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Investment Giant.
A major tropical holiday destination situated within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to build on the legacy and commitment that the Oatley family has established in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
Details of the Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family, pending customary approvals from regulators.
The family issued a comment saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately 30% of the area is developed, including a substantial array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and vintner, first bought the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's development boom first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and southern states.

Blackstone also owns luxury hotels and resorts in multiple nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
